Inscription on a tree

Until lately an inscription was clearly legible carved in its bark. It read:
D. Boone
Cilled A Bar
On Tree
In Year 1760

In the above paragragh, I guess D. Boone is a name.
But I wonder what Cilled A Bar means. Is it another name?

Any comments will be appreciated.

Daniel Boone was a famous American pioneer.

Killed a bear [spelling was not DB's greatest gift!].

Hi,

Daniel Boone.

Killed a bear. (The writer could't spell.)

This is a famous (but perhaps apocryphal?) inscription attributed to Daniel Boone, America's premier backwoodsman. It reads:

D. Boone killed a bear on [sic] this tree in the year 1760.

Added info:

Perhaps the most well-known American beech tree was one growing along a stage road in East Tennessee, into which Daniel Boone carved the inscription, "D.

"bear" was pronounced with an accent - it rhymed with "car" ( I remember from the ballad of Davy Crockett)
