Is it correct to say: Michael Jordan is my sporting idol.

I just heard someone say sporting idol and it is new to me. I am used to saying 'he is my sports idol' and not sporting. Is there a difference?

Dear teacher, please tell me if there is a difference between saying:
As if Jordan was going partying and drinking.
As if Jordan were going partying and drinking.

Also, is there an instance where the word 'were' is used after 'I or he', as in I were or he were. If yes, what would that mean?
