in/on pew

Hi! Do we say "sit on pew" or "sit in pew?" Pew is a bench in a church, and we say "sit on a bench" but the pew also has armrests, so I think we sit in the pews as the pew sort of encloses us. Which one is correct? "On pew" or "in pew?"

Top answer

I'm not certain it's because of the armrests, but I sit in a pew.
