Could I use 'in'?

-According to the forerunner __ Disciplinary Arts (or whatever field you are talking about), James Potter, Disciplinary Arts might be defined as a set of artistic practices.

My friend thinks IN is wrong, and OF should be used; but I think IN sounds OK, and I find IN in the BRITISH NATIONAL CORPUS, so I'm not sure.

Yes. It sounds perfectly fine to me. What "forerunner" is supposed to mean, exactly, is a bit fuzzy for me, however. "foremost expert", maybe? In that case "forerunner" is not a good word choice.
