Initiative, sizes

They signed a new contract at the initiative of their boss. (Their boss told them to do that.) Could 'at the initiative' be used?

I've got a couple of questions about sizes. I know I've already asked similar questions, but everybody keeps telling me something different. I just want to make sure that these sentences are idiomatic and correct.

Do you have this sweater in medium/ a medium. I've seen both options used interchangeably, but I still haven't figured out if both of them are correct.

I'd like to try these sneakers in a 39/ size 39. I was told that both are correct.

I'm going to put on the ones in the 39. (In case I've already talked about them.)

My jackets are mostly size medium. (A Brittish English speaker told me this is quite common.)

Thank you again. I hope you won't mind helping me clear this up one more time. I appreciate your patience with me.
