Ingredients of the cakes

Can I say,

We helped mother to prepare the ingredients of / for the cakes.

Top answer

The ingredients for a cake include flour, sugar, eggs, etc. You didn't "prepare the ingredients" unless you ground the flour, processed the sugar, or collected the eggs. If she needed nuts chopped, and you chopped the nuts, you have helped prepare the ingredients, but I don't think this what you meant.
