-ing words

why running, sitting, planning with double 'n' or 't' with -ing?
How come some other -ing words do not have it?
How can I know if the words need to double the letter or not?
Thank you!

How can you know ...? Well I use just a dictionary or a spell-checker until I know it really well (and I'm a native speaker).

There are rules for spelling and doubling the constonant depending on the consontants and vowels pattern in the word. Look up ING rules online.
