ING-PHRASE

Even after a decade young men and women still experience some of the effects of a divorce occurring when children.

Guys,

I dont see why above sentence is incorrect, though it sounds bit awkward? Can someone shed more lights into the phrase occurring when children.?

Thank you

I don't see why it is 'incorrect' either, since 'occurring' carries no time value except in relationship to the 'when' of the sentence (here, 'children'). Nevertheless, it is not generally accepted and should be replaced by the clearer 'having occurred' or recast in a simpler manner.

But 'when children' denies that possibility. It is only that it is stylistically confusing that it is unacceptable, I think.
