-ing clause

Hello teachers,

In the following sentence, is it ok to use the phrase marked in red?

(I'm wondering why it should be "having been left", not "being left".)

Nowadays there are many university graduates who are out of work, having been left behind by the increasingly strict demands of the tech-driven economy.

Top answer

To me, "having been" suggests that they had jobs for a while, but lost them in the economic downturn. The use of "increasingly" might support this. Technically, both work.
