Ing Clause

a. I searched the attic, looking for the photo album I (had) misplaced.

b. I was searching the attic, looking for the photo album I (had) misplaced.

2) The emboldened words in a is a participial phrase. What about the emoldened words in b? Is it a participial phrase also, or just a second predicate with an omitted 'and'?

Thank you
