Here's how I see it.

I would like to know the difference between complaining(1) and complaining(2) in grammar.

1. Stop complaining. It's a gerund. The structure is 'stop something'. eg Stop the noise.

2. They've got a nerve, complaining about our behaviour. I suppose some might argue that it's an adverbial phrase, but I see it as a present particip
