Informative

Hi,

Is it possible to use 'informative' to describe people. For example, to talk about someone who has great knowledge?

Thanks.

I wouldn't say it is wrong, but I never hear it used of a person. I hear it for things, eg that book/essay/program/discussion was very informative. Clive

It's certainly possible because I've done it.

Thank you very much for explaining all of that. You've been very informative.

Maybe I'm using it wrong, though.

Yes, I have used it to describe the person's behavior or the content of what he said.

But I think the poster was asking about this: John is an informative man. He knows a lot about a lot of different subjects.

OK. Maybe it's predicative but not attributive then.

But you can have an informative meeting, an informative treatise or an informative web site.

Oh, right. I'm not slicing up the universe of possibilities correctly.
