Informatics

Hello,

The word "informatics" has an entry in the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary as a synomym of computer science. Yet, I never saw this word anywhere. Is it a word commonly used by native speakers?

Thanks a lot.

Rui.

Thank you Clive.

The word is common across romance languages (Informatique in French, Informática in Portuguese, etc) but I never thought it was used in English. Yet, there is a huge amount of references when googled.

Ruca The word "informatics" has an entry in the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary as a synomym of computer science.
Do they also have an entry for bioinformatics, the application of computer science to biological data such as DNA sequences?

Thanks for looking. I predict that some day they will have that entry. Until then, I wonder ... Will I have to regard my "Certificate in Bioinformatics" invalid???

I have encountered the word "Informatics" because we have chains of computer schools here named as Informatics Computer Institute which we simply call as Informatics, for short.

Hi,
If I met someone at a party and they said they were studying informatics, I'd say 'Oh, what is that? Is it like Computer Science?'

Best wishes, Clive

Having worked in the field, my response would be different, namely, "Are you crazy?"
