I can't tell the difference between the two words below after checking dictionary.
Could anybody help me with it?

They suspected that he was the informant.

I would use informer.

All depends on the context. INFORMANT is a person( any person) who gives secret information about sb or sth to the police or newspaper whereas INFORMER is a criminal who gives information to the police. I hope this helps
