"inform" and "I like to think"?

I don't quite understand the meaning of "inform" and "I like to think" in the following passage. Can anyone help?

"I suffer from a rare disease, and it's great to communicate with people all over the world who also have the same problem. Without the Internet, I'd feel so alone. It has helped to inform me and also to make make freinds and share experiences with other sufferers."

"I've always wanted to write children's stories, but no publisher would print them. Now I have my own website. I like to think that children everywhere are enjoying them."
