Infinitives and Gerunds

My English is not so good, but can somebody tell me why this sentence is incorrect:

"When I make a mistake to write English sentences I get frustrated."

I was told that "to write" should become "writing" but I thought "to write" had the same meaning as "writing".

I am sorry if this is an obvious answer.

The given sentence should be: "When I make a mistake writing English sentences, I get frustrated."

If you want to use the infinitive in the same sense, the following is correct:

"I get frustrated when I try to write English sentences and make a mistake."

I see the correct answer, but I do not understand.

If I write "I like to eat sushi." or "I like eating sushi." they both have the same meaning and this is why I am confused with my example sentence.

The words that precede govern the choice of verb form.

"make a mistake" is followed by the -ing form.
"try" is followed by the to form.
"avoid" is followed by the -ing f
