Infinitive or ing

As I was doing an English grammar test, I had this question: I hate .... this early, but we have to be there at 7.

I answered with "waking you up" but it seems to be wrong and correct is "to wake you up" but I don't get it... I have been taught that after verbs like "hate, like, enjoy" an -ing form is required.

That's only true of 'enjoy'. 'love', 'like', and 'hate' don't require the -ing form.

In the given case there is a subtle difference between the infinitive and the -ing form. The first suggests a one-time "hatred"; the second suggests a perennial "hatre
