Infinitive or Gerund

I know that infinitive expresses purpose, future event, possibility. but I do not understand that why we use infinitive after the verbs of Think, know, consider, believe etc such as
1.we consider the campaign to have failed
here if we split the sentence then we will get "we consider that the campaign has failed" or" in our opinion the campaign has failed" so we get a subordinate clause here that is the object of the verb consider. then why we can not apply the rules on the verb remember such as
2.I remember my father bringing home a huge Christmas tree. here if we split the sentence then we get "I remember that my father brought home a huge Christmas tree." so here we get a subordinate clause that is the object of remember but why we can not use the structure like "I remember my father to bring home a huge Christmas tree." please explain where i use infinitive and gerund.
Thinking you.
