Infinitive or gerund?

HI! everyone.Could you tell me,if my understandings about these are right?
1-I bought my dog a pot to drink water.(I think this sentence is not implying what I want it to imply and I think both the verb clauses relates to me,I mean both buying and drinking work is being done by me.(Am I correct at that?)
2-I bought my dog a pot for drinking water.(what about this one,is now the sentence showing that the pot is for dog to drink water.)
what is the difference between 1 and 2?
I will be very thankful if someone helped me with this.
Thanks!
