Infinitive

" The last thing I wanted was to upset you." I read this sentence recently in the Oxford Dictionary.

Can anyone explain to me why the sentence does't have "to do" after" wanted"as in

" The last thing I wanted to do was upset you " ?

Your suggestion is a perfectly good one. In fact, I prefer that style, but the 'to do' is optional. 'To upset you' can be classified as a noun, so can function as the object of the verb want.
