Inferring - Teaching Reading Strategies

I am a student doing my TESL certification. I am doing a project on reading strategies, specifically inferring. We need to write about "past and current uses" of our focus strategy.

Does anyone know anything about the origin of inferring (in English teaching, of course) or whether the teaching technique has changed over the years?
