industry

I have this sentence with the word "industry" from my friend's dictionary and am wondering why it would be there witout an article since it as an uncountable noun meaning " the work and processes involved in making things in factories " according to my young friend's Collins/Cobuild Compact English Learner's Dictionary.

The main functions of the merchant banks is to raise capital for industry.

Yes, it's correct to not have an article here. If you wanted to specify a particular type of industry, then you'd use "the" - "for the semiconductor industry" or "for the automotive industry," for example.
