What does it mean when somebody asks, "Will you indulge me for a moment?"

Example:

Mary: "Janice, if you keep quiet for a minute or so and indulge me, I'll explain what I mean."

Announcer to crowd: "Ladies and Gentlemen, I beg for your indulgence for a couple of minutes or so ...." What does the announcer mean here?
