Inductive reasoning proceeds from a set of examples to establish the truth of a general rule.

When scientists gather data and analyze it or when they formulate hypotheses and test them in an attempt to infer a general pattern which might be a law of nature, they are using inductive reasoning. This type of reasoning has much to do with discovery.
