Inductive reasoning proceeds from a set of examples to establish the truth of a general rule.

When scientists gather data and analyze it or when they formulate hypotheses and test them in an attempt to infer a general pattern which might be a law of nature, they are using inductive reasoning. This type of reasoning has much to do with discovery.

Deductive reasoning proceeds from a set of rules to establish the truth of a specific example.

When scientists apply the formulas and equations which describe the laws of nature in order to accomplish such things as building bridges, planning electronic circuits, or constructing a chemical plant, they are using deductive reasoning. This type of reasoning has much to do with applications.

For most tasks in ordinary life, we use a combination of both types of reasoning.
