Indirect/Direct Objects

I asked whom? = them

I asked what = if they were happy



I know 'them' isn't a direct object, but an indirect object. How can I tell, since the above way is floored?

I told them that they were welcome.

I told whom = them

I told what = that they were welcome

Same again



So am I right to say that 'them' in both are indirect objects and the noun clauses are direct objects?
