Indirect speech backshifting

My friend is moving next Sunday. Another friend has just called to ask if I want to go to a movie on exactly that day. How do I reply to that? "Sorry, my friend said he is/was moving next Sunday." Are both grammatically correct? Can I use both in this situation since that hasn't happened yet?

Yes. But I would use "is."
