Grammar

indirect speech

Hi!

l have a question

I'd appreciate your effort if you answered my question.

Here it goes~

They hoped their work would induce social change(taken by a dictionary)

This sentence is indirect speech

Maybe original sentence(direct speech) would be like this

1.I hope our work will induce social change.(more confident, more definite)

or

2.I hope out work would induce social change.(less confident, less definite)

Here is my problem.

By English grammar, aforementioned both sentences(1,2) is transformed to

"They hoped their work would induce social change" in indirect speech.

"will" in "I hope our work will induce social change." -> "would" in "They hoped their work would induce social change.)"

"would" in I hope our work would induce social change." -> "would" in "They hoped their work would induce social change."

So then how should I interpret the changed sentence?

Readers or listeners would just face the transformed sentence(They hoped their work would induce social change.)

I think they would not know the original meaning of "would" in "They hoped their work would induce social change."

It just makes no difference? (but I don't think so because the meaning of the both modal verbs is quite different, isn't it?)

Is it okay that I Interpret the transformed "would" as "will" or "would"?

Oh this makes me crazy~

Please I need your help!!

I hope ou r work would induce social change. This is not a very natural sentence. If we wished to express less certainty, we would say "I hope our work may induce social change".
