Indirect speech

Hello,

can you please say of my sentence is correct? I'm not entirely sure about the use of the last verb (felt)

Direct speech: I wanted to see what it felt like.
Indirect speech: He said he had wanted to see what it felt like/had felt like.

Thank you for the answer. I don't understand why there is no call for the past perfect. I was told that in reported speech verbs move one tense back in the past.

Well, look at the past perfect had wanted. Its purpose is to indicate that the time of the wanting was earlier than the time of the speaking, rather than simultaneous with it. Had felt would serve no such purpose here, or any at al
