Indirect speech

1) He said. - "What time did it start?"

He wanted to know what time it had started.

2) She said, "Did he marry Sue?"

She wondered if/whether he married Sue.

In 2nd , Can't we write "She wondered if/whether he had married Sue" ? as compared to the first one?

Please advise.

These are both correct, and better than the simple past. (married):

She wondered if he had married Sue.
She wondered whether he had married Sue.
