Indigo blue, deep enough to make them shiver?

Hello everybody.

I'm reading How Do You Live by Genzaburo Yoshino.

When they looked up, the sky showed clearly through the tall treetops,

which had already shed most of their leaves. The night sky spreading

above was indigo blue, deep enough to make them shiver, and in it the

stars shone small and high, as if they were holes poked through by the tip

of a needle.

It’s so beautiful! Copper thought. It was the sort of crisp, clear autumn

evening that closed tightly around his body and made him want to

breathe deeply.

I can't figure out indigo blue, deep enough to make them shiver? What is the relationship between deep blue sky and making us shiver?

My another question is what high means in the stars shone small and high.

And my last question what closed tightly around his body means.

I really appreciate you for the great help ??. ??
