Independent/Dependent Clause

1) Because of the opposition from the religious groups and some legal professionals, euthanasia is still not legalized in Hong Kong.

2) Especially in the medical field, euthanasia raises heated debates.

I was told that the sentences are simple sentences. Why? Shouldn't it be a complex sentence?

A month ago I would have said that these introductory phrases are not clauses, but I've now learned that the distinction between phrases and clauses is blurred. Clauses no longer need verbs. Whether or not a complex sentence requires an old-style subordinate clause (with a verb) has to be a matter of definition.
