Independent versus joint

Hi,

Is the following sentence correct and easy to understand? Is there a better way of writing it?

By the term ‘independent' here I meant the opposite of ‘joint' as in ‘jointly distributed' and not the opposite of the term ‘dependent'.

Thanks,

MG.
