independent clause

The bold independent clause, does it fit into the whole sentence?
Is this how to use AS..AS in a sentence like this? Do I have to change something?

As well as he plays, the team only gave him a one year contract.
As bad as they played, had they made all their free throws, they would have won.

ThankYou
