Independent and Dependent Cluase

What is the Independent and Dependent Clause of:

1. An experienced animal trainer was killed Wednesday in an accident with a killer whale at SeaWrold in Orlando, law enforement and park officials said.

2. "One of our most experienced trainers drowned in an incident with one of the killer whales," he said.

I think that is more what his question regards: he is unsure how to analyse this, because upon first look, it seems there are two independent clauses, one in the quoted material and one not.

For the 1st sentence, i thought the independent clause is " law enforement and park officials said" and the dependent clause is "An experienced animal trainer was killed Wednesday in an accident with a killer whale at SeaWrold in Orlando."

Could you ask your teacher if you are supposed to examine the quoted material as the main sentence?

Otherwise "X said Y" is simply the independent clause.

Within the quoted material, there is also an independent clause. There is nothing "dependent" about saying "A trainer was killed." That's a complete thought. So is "One [of our trainers] drowned."

The reason I think he is labelling the quoted material as a dependent clause is because in indirect speech the words that are quoted in direct speech is now a dependent clause:

Jim said, "I will no longer eat fast food."

Jim said (that) he would no longer eat fast food.
