Independent and dependent clauses in question form

I have been told sentences like a below are not correct. Does this mean b is also incorrect?

a Can you please tell me the answer because I have not been listening?

b Do we have to order the products for him, provided he can afford it?

I wouldn't call this incorrect, just a bit clumsy. I'd put a comma after 'answer'.
