In storybooks, why is the first paragraph not indented, but all the other paragraphs are?

Different publishers will have different styles. For example, the first letter of the first word of a chapter may be huge. Clive opened the door in breathless anticipation.

Or the first typset line could be in a different font.

It's just "to be pretty." Even if you don't find it pretty yourself.

I notice in all storybooks I've read, the first paragraph is not indented, whereas all the other paragraphs are.

It simply a matter of style. There's no reason at all. Just like there's no reason to have a huge capital letter. Someone on the editorial staff though that look was a good look.
