Indefinite,definite, or zero article

Hi,

Is the following sentence correct?

"For humans, shadow in a way is an allegory for our defiance against the innate darkness which flows in our veins, the darkness we call egoism."

Thanks in advance, AL

"shadow" is used here as an uncountable noun. This is unusual but not impossible. I don't understand the sentence as a whole.
