Indefinite Pronouns

Singular indefinite pronouns will go with singular verbs and plural indefinite pronouns with plural verbs. When a indefinite pronoun can be both singular or plural then it is based on the context. Am I correct?

In this sentence would was be used or are they reffering to each individual student which would make it plural.
