Indefinite article with plural nouns

Hello,
I have just come across the following structure that has made me confused:
"It was an exciting three weeks."

I wonder why the indefinite article "an" is used here since the noun is plural "three weeks".

Can anyone please explain this to me? Thank you in advance.
