Indefinite article + uncountable noun

Hello, morning everyone. Have a nice day.

1. There had been a rancor of his father in his voice before he knew the truth.

2. There was rancor of his father in his voice.

I used zero article in 2nd sentence because it was general and typical of his voice in the past, whereas an "a" was used because the rancor was limited to a specific duration or period.

Are they all correct?

Thank you.
