Indefinite article for one random person

If today's top singer released his or her next piece on the Internet, it would be like playing in a theater with 20 million seats. I am just wondering if I should put A before today's since the sentence is talking about one random person. Could you help me clarify it? Thanks.

"today's top singer" means one specific person who is judged "top" according to some criterion. It may be too restrictive for your sentence. After all, the same would apply to many popular singers, wouldn't it?

  • "a top singer" implies that there are a number of "top" singers, and you are talking about any one of them.
  • This may be better for your sentence, but "a today's top singer" is ungrammatical.
