Hi I have a doubt with the use of indefinite article here.
There was a cuckoo on a tree near the pond. Here indefinite is used before cuckoo and tree. It sounds alright to me. I hear that it is not right to use indefinite articles before two successive nouns. Is there any rule like that?

It depends on the context. It may sound odd, but it is grammatical. Imagine if someone asked you to describe what you had seen in a dream. You might say ... There was a pen on a table and a doll on a chair and a toy truck on a box.
