Vocabulary

incumbent

I learned this word recently as I came across the phrase "be incumbent on sb to do sth", i think it's of the same meaning as "be one's responsiblity to do sth", but not as commonly used.

Can anyone give some example on how you use this word normally, do you use it at all? Is there some special meaing to it which can not be replaced by its synonymy?

ps: Should I use to or in in the above sentense?

Thank you for your help.

"Incumbent" can also be a noun to denote a person currently holding office. The word is not nearly so formal in this sense, as it is used every time an election comes around, especially if the "incumbent" is running for re-election.

Hi,

In any case I have come across to it , it-in a way - meant: dependent followed by the very preposition : upon

Your total success is incumbant upon how well you study and how much time and energy you allot to that.
