why sometimes we use " increase by a thousand fold" while sometimes use"increase a thousand fold"?

Hi, To me, the normal expression is without 'by'. But I wouldn't say 'by' is wrong. Such expressions are rather idiomatic and flexible.

To me, the normal expression is without 'by'.
But I wouldn't say 'by' is wrong.
Such expressions are rather idiomatic and flexible.
