My father was going to start his own company. When you start a company and you want to get all the benefits having a company brings (tax write-offs...), it has to be incorporated. That's what the inc. stands for. ltd. (limited) is also acceptable, and as far as the government is concerned, has the same meaning. Most business textbooks give them the same meaning also.
