income of sorts?

"Aren't transfer payments also an income of sorts?"

In the above sentence, could I change the last 'an income of sorts' into 'income of sorts' thereby making the sentence

"Aren't transfer payments also income of sorts?"

How about if I changed the sentence this way

"Aren't transfer payments also a type of income?"

and lastly how about this?

"Aren't transfer payments also a type of an income?"

I am getting truly confused with articles...please help me. Thanx a lot ^^
