Hi. Although I feel the first sentence is correct, I feel the second sentence is more clear. What do you think?

They have to show their possession of critical thinking skills through various course components including/that includes presentations and school work.

Another question: Would you say the placement of the word "on" is optional as possibly illustrated here?

Please place it one side.

Please place it on one side of the room.
