include the articles in quotes or not

Hi,

Please take a look at the sentences below. Tell me why the quoted phrase has no article in the first sentence and why the quoted phrase in the second sentence has the article.

1. Meg referred to her horse as a "magnificent white steed."

2. The newspaper called Josh "the hero of the game."

Yes, Nona, but I think Anonymous wants to know why the article is inside one quote and outside the other.
If the original speaker used the article, it can be included in the quote, but it's always up to the writer how much of the sentence he/she wants to quote, including or excluding the article.
