Incidental adverbial

Hello,

There are two sentences,

"Determined never to come back before he could make a big fortune,he left home without saying a word."

"Determining never to come back before he could make a big fortune,he left home without saying a word."

and I want to know which one is correct.

Could you answer my question and tell me the reason?

Thank you so much!

Determined never to come back before he had made a big fortune, he left home without saying a word.

"Determined ..." is the word you want, I think. This refers to his already-established state of mind when he left, whereas "Determining ..." suggests that he deliberated the matter at or around the time of leaving, which doesn't seem as likely.
