In/at the end

Hi,

I have a problem regarding the use of in/at the end of something.

I saw the following sentence in a vocabulary:

Can you tie a knot in the end of this thread?

I've always thought that "in the end" means "finally"?!

Please guide me.

Thank you in advance!

Well, if you use a needle and thread to sew a button on a shirt, you usuallytie a knot at the end so that it won't undo. The end meaning the place you cut the thread as you need no more.
